Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to present the surgical results of refractory external type snapping hip by Zplasty of the iliotibial band.

Materials and Methods: Six symptomatic snapping hips in four consecutive patients who underwent an iliotibilal band Z-plasty from September 1998 through March 2003 were reviewed. There were three males(four hips) and one female(two hips), with an average age of 29.5 years(range, 16 to 45 years). Mean duration of symptoms prior to surgical intervention was 48.3 months(range, 14 to 72 months) with an average follow up of 11.7 months(range, 8 to 15 months). The results were evaluated according to the existence of pain and snapping, degree of hip motion, and the subjective satisfaction.

Results: All patients had complete resolution of the pain and snapping hip, and returned to full unrestricted activities. The range of hip motion showed within normal range. There were no complications and all patients returned to the previous work after the operation and satisfied with the result of operation.

Conclusion: Z-plasty of the iliotibial band for refractory external-type snapping hip revealed excellent results.
